Smithgall Woods State Park and Conservation Area located near Helen Ga is a great place to spend the day. There is all kinds of activities here for everyone. Catch and release trout fishing on Dukes Creek North Georgias premier trout stream, Archery, Biking, Birdwatching, Geocaching, hiking, and hunting, camping and cottages are available. (some activities require reservations)
There are 23 miles of hiking trails at Smithgall Woods. Ash Creek Trail, Martins Mine Trail, Chunanee Falls Trail, Wetland Loop Trail, visitors Center Loop Trail, and Laurel Ridge Trail. Due to hunting at the Park the only trail open was the Laurel Ridge Trail
Laurel Ridge Trail
This trail starts next to the visitors center, and is listed as a moderate 1.6 mile loop that climbs Laurel Ridge. I would say that this trail would be considered strenuous as it is an uphill climb. However it is a beautiful hike through the woods with beautiful flowers and foliage. Make sure you pick up and interpretive brochure from the visitors Center to learn about specific points of interest along the trail. You will need to keep an eye out for the post along the way from the brochure as most are no longer numbered.
Top of Laurel Ridge
Once you reach the top you will have an breathtaking view of Mt. Yonah.
The other side of the Ridge
The climb down is also pretty steep with lots of tree roots and gravel. Watch your footing.
Dukes Creek
We enjoyed a picnic along Dukes Creek. There are several beautiful spots along the creek with picnic tables to enjoy.

You might want to stay in Helen Ga there are several hotels, bed and breakfast, and the lodges. The town of Helen is a great place to visit and the area offers plenty of trails to hike, tubing the river, kayaking, fishing, and winery’s to visit.

Hiking and much more Smithgall Woods State Park is a great place to visit. This is where we spend our time. The trails are well groomed and there is so much to see and do. The scenery is beyond compare. You can picnic or just kick back and enjoy the natural surroundings. There are many great family friendly spots as well as quiet spots for those who want to get away from it all.
