Hardeeville, SC
Ronnie is working in Hardeeville, SC so this weekend I am headed down for one of our spontaneous weekend getaways. It was an easy 5-hour drive from my home in NE Georgia. I met up with Ronnie and his friend Mike there.
Low Country Town Buffington
That night we headed over to Bluffton, SC. a Low Country town that is one square mile known as Old town and is situated on a bluff along the May River where we visited the Bluffton Oyster Company. Here we were able to catch the last glimmer of the amazing sunset over the May River. We had dinner that night in the old town. A great end to a wonderful evening.
Talmadge Memorial Suspension Bridge gateway to Savannah
The next morning we set out for a short drive to Savannah. Crossing the Talmadge Memorial Suspension Bridge connecting Savannah to Hutchinson Island, a great way to enter Savannah. Crossing the river you have the industrial area on the left going into town and the skyline of the town on the right. Who would not be impressed by such a magnificent bridge spanning the Savannah River, especially when the massive cargo ships look like they are barely able to make it as they cross under it? Beautiful views in the evening that captures the charm of the city.
Cobblestones and the River
We stayed downtown at the Old Savannah Hampton on Bay Street situated perfectly to explore the historical old town.
We headed out on the old cobblestone roads that lead down to the Riverfront on River Street. Where the historical old waterfront Brick buildings line the waterway. Once shops, taverns, Brothels, and holding pens for incoming slaves, it is now filled with quaint restaurants and shops.
Known as one of the most haunted areas in Savannah one can still hear if you try the sounds of horse traffic on the old cobblestone. There are many historical statues and landmarks to see along your walk down by the river.
The sights, sounds, and smells of River Street gained momentum on our late morning stroll. All of the Restaurants began to cook their different blends to lure you in. Great seafood was what we were looking for so we had to try the Oysters Savannah that everyone raved about. Unforntatley they won’t get any raves from me they tasted like they were covered in the sand. Not very appetizing.
Next, it was time to enjoy some Hotel time! We had cocktails at the rooftop pool that overlooks the bay and caught a few rays of bennies. (Beneficial sunlight that is). Check out pool rule number 9. Frightening!!!!
Savannah Belle Ferry
After a relaxing break, we headed back to Riverwalk and headed over to the free Savannah Belle Ferry that skips back and forth across the Savannah River. We were able to see a beautiful sunset from Hutchinson Island while enjoying cocktails at the Tiki bar poolside and riverfront looking back on the panoramic view of old Savannah. On our trip back across the river, we were able to see the riverwalk lite up. It is truly a sight to see.
Night Falls on the River
Antebellum Homes Oaks with Moss
After dark, we went in search of the Old Pink House rumored to be the finest Restaurant in Savannah.
We headed south into the heart of old Savannah. Where Antebellum homes and buildings hide down the side streets with old oaks with moss swinging slowly in the wind. We stopped in several of the fine eateries for samples of the local cuisine on our way to downtown Savannah where the nightlife was in full swing with people in the streets listening to music and enjoying the beautiful night. We finally found the Old Pink House but without reservations, we were not able to eat there. ( make sure you make a reservation well ahead of time) They do have a great Tavern below the restaurant with a jazz band and a cozy bar where we finished off a great evening with the house wine and a nice chat with Lynn on an easy end to the Savannah Adventure.
Beaufort, SC Fish Camp
Sunday and its time to head back to Hardeeville, but first, we make a stop at Beaufort SC it is a city on Port Royal Island, one of South Carolina’s coastal sea islands. It’s known for its antebellum mansions, especially in the downtown historic district. After touring around the island we found a great place for lunch in Port Royal. The Fish Camp where we enjoyed a Blackened Fish sandwich and conversation with a sweet couple.
Well, it has been a great weekend as always. We enjoyed many new adventures, new people, and delicious foods along the way. We hope you have enjoyed this adventure with us. But as they say, all good things must come to an end so until next time remember to live each day to its fullest.
Captain Ron.
